Fatima was elevated to the status of a small town in 1977 and received the status of a city in 1997. Because of its history and the events it once witnessed, many describe it as a land of wonders or a city of peace. The year 1917 left an indelible mark on this special Portuguese corner, at that time a peaceful pastoral place where little or nothing happened, except for the simple rural life of its inhabitants. It was in this year that three children witnessed the phenomenon later known as milagre de Fatima (miracle of Fatima).
