Cruising to the center of Lisbon for sightseeing, you will pass the city's buildings and monuments, viewing them from water. Lisbon is one of the oldest cities in the world and predates other modern European capitals by centuries. Incredibly rich in architecture, it features Romanesque, Gothic, Manueline, Baroque, Modern and Postmodern buildings. As you go down the river, you will see Belém Tower, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and 16th-century Portuguese Renaissance fortification that was used for embarkation and disembarkation for Portuguese explorers. Another sight that will not leave you indifferent will be the figure of Christ the King or Cristo Rei. Standing on the southern bank of the Tagus River, it resembles the Christ statue in Rio de Janeiro and stands over 100 meters tall. The monument was built after World War II to commemorate that Portugal was spared the horrors and destruction of the war. You will pass Ponte 25 de Abril, the sister bridge of the San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge that was designed by the same architect in 1966. It was constructed in order to connect Lisbon with the Setubal peninsula across the Tagus River. Previously the structure was called the Salazar Bridge, but it was renamed after the Carnation Revolution that took place on April 25 1974 and ended the dictatorship. The cruise will continue, and you will also see Terreiro do Paço Square, the Monument to the Discoveries and São Jorge Castle, a distinguishable landmark of Lisbon's skyline that dates back to the 1st century BC.
