Split is the second largest city in Croatia, which grew out of a Roman palace built by Emperor Diocletian in 295 AD. It still stands today, and the city's narrow streets are lined with 220 buildings, including churches, chapels, cafes, and restaurants. The south wall of the palace has now become an attractive promenade of Riva, with rows of beautifully manicured palm trees.

Five kilometers inland, there is Salona, the sprawling ruins of Roman Dalmatia, and the birthplace of Diocletian. Above the city towers, you can see the fortress of Klis, and along the coast is the medieval walled city of Trogir. And, of course, there are gorgeous beaches nearby, and the island of Hvar is only an hour away by boat.
